Seeing the 'double take' post on David's blog, I associate with the bird's nest. Beautiful architecture!

'Safety in a small region is my home;
For a safe civilization we count on everyone.'

The slogan is difficult to translate without losing the compact efficiency and beauty of the Chinese text. In Chinese both lines start with 'safety' '安全', both end with 'jia' '家'. The term 'civilization' '文明' is often used in slogans to implement the policy of the government. Especially over the last five years, first in preparation of the Olympic games in Beijing 2008 and now for the preparation of the Shanghai 2010 exhibition, lots of effort goes to the 'civilization' of people and society. 'Safety' campaign is one of the issues very prominent in public space in China.

a landmark in patent improvement

The Chinese situation of Intellectual Property has been improving over the past decades. That's why I spent a chapter on it in The Wall Behind China's Open Door. Yesterday the Economist reported on patent improvement in China, taking the example of Schneider Electric of France engaged in a lawsuit of the Chinese Chint Group: "... the tables turned on April 15th when the two companies settled an infringement case — with the French firm forking over $23m to Chint. The rich settlement against a foreign firm is a landmark. It serves as a reminder that Chinese companies are just as eager to defend patents as Western firms, and that China’s intellectual-property regime has been tightened in recent years."
