In the middle of the 1980s lots of new magazines and art publications were established, mirroring the lively discussions and creative art scene at the time. The most influential ones were Meishu Sichao 美术思潮 and Zhongguo Meishu Bao 中国美术报. Jiangsu Huakan 江苏画刊, was already founded in 1974 during the Cultural Revolution as a bimonthly popular art magazine. In 1985 it was transformed into a monthly journal with the mission to promote contemporary art in China. This shows that the coming into being of contemporary Chinese art in the 1980s was not something that solely happened outside the official establishment.
