The Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai 民生现代美术馆 recently had a retrospective of Geng Jianyi's work. One of the installations in the exhibition showed hundreds of discarded objects Geng Jianyi gathered from his friends. An amazing collection of cups, thermos flasks, electronic devices, office furniture, old
typewriters, books, magazines, newspapers, a
joss paper boat made from fen-notes, shoes, hats, blankets, a bed, a
sputum pot, a bucket, gifts, and so on. Geng Jianyi
created a transparent box for each object and attached a card with the name of the
person who gave it (this typewriter belonged to 薛松 Xue Song), the moment it was given, the relationship with Geng Jianyi, the kind of object, the moment when a person started to use it and had finished using it and the reason why. Numerous readings are possbile - consumerism,
China’s reality of the nineties, the passing of time, the evolution of technology, the
presence of westerners in China, the ‘throw away mentality’ from the planned
economy and many more.
